Routes to Becoming a Web Designer

It is possible to begin training for this work straight from school ideally with good GCSEs/S grades in English, maths, IT and science. Some employers recruit people with A levels or equivalent qualifications as trainee web authors, who then go on to become full time Web Designers.

It is important to build up a strong portfolio of experience in designing web pages and this may compensate for lack of formal qualifications. A personal website with an online CV or career profile and hyperlinks to other websites produced is useful and can be accessed directly by potential employers.

Many companies offer Web Design Training on specific packages such as Dreamweaver and Adobe Golive. Prices of courses vary and so does the quality of training. Be sure to ask for clear information on

- what is included on the course
- the credentials of the instructor
- testimonials of previous students

It is also useful to have experience in working on graphics packages that are utilised to design websites. They include Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks.

A good way to get experience would be to ask professional Website Designers if you could work with them for free. Why not ask them and give it a try.
