Travel agency sales consultants, also known as travel agency sales clerks, advise clients and sell them holidays and travel.
Travel Agents talk to clients to find out what type of holiday they want.
They show clients holiday brochures, answer any questions and may suggest
particular resorts or hotels.
When clients have chosen a holiday, sales consultants check that it is available, using a computer. If clients accept, consultants book the holiday, collect a deposit and fill in booking forms.
Travel Agents should:
- have a knowledge of geography
- like dealing with people
- be cheerful and friendly
- have good keyboard and IT skills

Although there are no set qualifications, most employers look for a good standard of education, probably including GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) in subjects such as maths, English and geography. The right personal qualities for the job are very important.
They also look for ABTAC qualifications (which can be gained at work), and IATA agencies require a qualification in fares and ticketing.
Check out courses such as the ICS Travel Courses. This course will give
you an excellent overview of all areas of the travel industry - including
the terminology, how the business works, and giving you an idea of what
travel clients are looking for. It’s a great way to get the skills
and confidence you need, either to get a job or for further study.
