Public relations consultants help businesses to establish and maintain mutual understanding and goodwill between an organisation and the public. They offer advice on how to provide clear information about an organisation or its products to the outside world through broadcast, print and electronic media. They will also advise on or monitor public and media perception of an organisation by doing research and commissioning surveys.
typical responsibilities may include:
- planning public relations programmes
- recommending strategies to clients
- liaising with the media
- organising and arranging news conferences, press launches etc
- writing and producing leaflets, brochures, press releases, newsletters
and websites
- public speaking at presentations and media interviews

Most people applying to work as a public relations officer\consultant are graduates. The Institute of Public Relations (IPR) provides a list of approved first degrees in PR on its website. It also lists appropriate masters degrees and postgraduate diploma courses.
Training
The Communication, Advertising and Marketing Education Foundation
(CAM) Advanced Certificate and Higher Diploma in Public Relations can
be studied for part time, full time and by intensive or distance learning.
Public relations officers can also work towards membership of the IPR by studying for the IPR Diploma Foundation and Diploma.
