- putting mail into mailbags and loading them on to vans, lorries, trains
and even aircraft to be delivered
- delivering mail to several hundred addresses on a round
- collecting mail from post boxes and businesses over a set route
- delivering this mail to a mail centre where it is sorted automatically

No formal academic qualifications are needed to become a postman/psotwoman. Candidates are selected following an aptitude test and interview. The tests can last around 15 minutes and involve checking your ability to read addresses properly.
Most recruits are at least 18, but younger people may be recruited in some parts of the country as postal cadets, and then progress on to become a postman/postwoman. Cadets are paid while they are training. This involves sorting and delivering letters, messenger work, and other jobs in mail operations.
Cadets may need to attend college on day release and study for qualifications, including NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Mail Operations. GCSEs/S grades in English and maths may be needed to get in. Cadet posts are very limited, so check with the local delivery office.
Applicants may need to have a medical. The ability to ride a bicycle is useful.
