A wine producer makes wine from grapes. Wine is produced from red and white grapes grown on vineyards all over the world, and includes varieties such as:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Pinot Noir
  • Chardonnay
  • Merlot
  • Champagne and sparkling wines.

Wine making can involve working in one, or both, of the following areas:

  • Viticulture - growing grapes in the vineyard
  • Vinification - working in the winery, making wine from grapes.

Wine producing is a horticultural business and much of the year involves planting, tending and finally harvesting the grape, using agricultural equipment such as pruners and tractors. Inside the winery, a wine producer operates presses, fermentation tanks and other wine-making equipment.

Salaries for wine producers range from around £10,000 to £50,000 a year, depending on the location and size of the vineyard.

Wine producing is technical and scientific work, but also involves a lot of marketing and communication skills. Wine producers frequently work abroad in wine-producing regions in Europe, North and South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. There are increasing opportunities to work in English vineyards.

Many wine producers work in the family business. Others start through casual work, or as a cellar hand in a winery. However, winemaking courses are becoming more popular at degree level, where students study all stages of the wine-making process, including bottling and marketing. There are NVQs/SVQs available in Horticulture, Agriculture and Land Based Operations at Level 1, and in Production Horticulture and Agricultural Crops at Levels 2/3. Apprenticeships in Production Horticulture and Agricultural Crop Production are available.

Wine producers often buy and run their own vineyards, or move into marketing and retail positions in the wine trade.
