Windscreen fitters repair and replace laminated windscreens and side and rear glass in vehicles. They may do this either in a workshop or garage, or wherever the vehicle is situated. Windscreen replacement can also be done on the roadside.

In most cases windscreen fitters install glass that has been either pre-cut or shaped, but if this is not available they have to cut with a template using flat laminated glass. Some windscreens can be repaired, which is done by using specialised adhesives to fill in the damage and then polishing to leave the repair invisible.

Many windscreen fitters also work as general vehicle mechanics and some work on vehicle assembly lines.

Most windscreen fitters work around 38 hours a week. This is often from 9am to 5pm, but some fitters are required to be available to carry out emergency repairs on a 24-hour basis, so some shift work may be required. Some fitters work in a mobile service unit, which travels in a specific area and involves weekend and night work. Others may work shifts on a vehicle assembly line.

Salaries range from £10,500 for a trainee windscreen fitter starting out, to £20,000 for experienced windscreen fitters.

A windscreen fitter should:

  • have a good general knowledge of motor vehicles
  • enjoy manual work
  • be computer literate as many companies control their operations by computer
  • have good levels of fitness and full colour vision
  • be able to work quickly and methodically
  • have no allergies to chemicals, kerosene and sealants.

There are almost 35 million vehicles on the roads in the UK, and demand for skilled windscreen fitters is strong throughout the UK. They may work for car servicing workshops and repair garages, specialist glass fitters used by insurance companies for windscreen replacement, vehicle manufacturing companies and public transport companies.

There are no set entry requirements to become a windscreen fitter. Many enter as a school leaver, and are taken on by an employer as an apprentice. Apprenticeships do not usually ask for set qualifications, but it is useful to have some GCSE/S grades (A-E/1-5), or equivalent vocational qualifications, particularly in English and maths.

It is possible to train as a windscreen fitter at any age provided some experience of working with vehicles can be offered and the physical requirements of the job can be met.

Trainees work towards NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Automotive Glazing. Promotion for windscreen fitters may be to supervisory roles, to a technician in vehicle repair and maintenance, or to a position in customer service.
