  • Window installers fit new or replacement windows and doors in houses, offices, factories and schools.
  • Sometimes they remove existing windows, with hand and power tools.
  • They then insert the new windows, fixing them in place, making them weatherproof, level and secure.
  • Finally, they remove all mess and rubbish, and make good any plaster, damaged wood or masonry .
  • The work may also involve fitting conservatories, replacement doors and weatherboarding.

Window installers work a 39-hour week, Monday to Friday, and may work overtime. They work indoors and outdoors in most weather conditions. The work involves working at heights, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and some heavy lifting.

Trainees earn around £13,000. Supervisors may earn around £30,000.

Window installers should:

  • be careful
  • be pleasant and polite to customers and respect their property
  • be able to measure and make calculations
  • be physically fit
  • have hand skills.

Window installers work throughout the UK. Most companies are based in towns and cities, and may be large national firms or small companies.

GCSEs/S grades (A-E/1-5) or equivalent qualifications are preferred for Modern Apprenticeships.

There are no upper age limits, as long as applicants are able to lift windows and work at heights.

Initial training is provided by employers. Entrants then work with experienced window installers before being allowed to work alone. Trainees may work towards NVQs/SVQs at Levels 2 and 3.

Experienced window installers may become window surveyors or estimators, and many become self-employed.
