Wallpaper designers, also known in the industry as stylists and colourists, create repeat patterns for wall coverings. They may produce bespoke designs to meet a client's specific requirements, or work for a larger textile manufacturer, producing collections for sale in retail outlets.
Designers work with different materials, finishes and colours, sometimes producing matching items, including fabrics for home furnishings. They usually work two seasons ahead, liaising with buyers to predict the forthcoming trends. Some may also be responsible for buying materials for a collection, the production process, budgeting, marketing and sales promotion.
Wallpaper designers' hours are usually from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Longer hours may be required to attend trade shows or if there are deadlines to meet for the collections.
Salaries range from around £10,000 to £42,000 a year. Freelance designers normally charge per design or collection.

They might work for a textile or wall covering specialist, or as part of an in-house design team employed by a retail chain. Self-employment is also a possibility, particularly in the bespoke field. Freelance designers often use agents to market their products, paying them a set percentage of their fees. Competition for places is fierce.
There are different routes into this career, but most successful designers begin after taking a degree or HND in textiles or art and design. Many employers visit the end of term shows, selecting the best talent. Degree courses accept mature students who can demonstrate a passion for the subject and offer a strong portfolio.
Most training takes place on the job, working with more experienced designers and developing new techniques and skills.
Entrants usually start in a junior stylist position before moving up the promotion ladder to senior designer. Some wallpaper designers move into related careers in textile buying, design management, colourist work or interior design.
