The usual working week is 37.5 hours, Monday to Friday. Overtime at weekends or in the evenings is common. Tilers usually work indoors in homes, offices and other buildings.
Trainees usually earn about £12,500. A qualified tiler earns £21,000.
Tilers need:
Many wall and floor tilers are self-employed. They also work for specialist tiling firms, which are usually small.
They may become a trainee straight from school and train on the job, or train on Modern Apprenticeships. It is useful to have some GCSEs/S grades (A-E/1-5), especially maths, craft, design and technology and English.
Most people learn practical skills on the job and attend college or a training centre to get qualifications such as NVQs/SVQs or City & Guilds certificates.
Tilers can progress to technician level, supervisory or contract management positions. They can also become self-employed.
