Vehicle parts operatives normally work from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In some firms, staff cover evenings and weekends.
Shops and retail dealerships' parts departments are usually well appointed, with goods on display. There may be some bending, lifting and carrying.
Vehicle parts operatives start on around £10,000, and can earn up to £20,000.
There are no minimum qualifications, but employers look for a reasonable standard of education. Some ask for four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3), ideally including maths, English language and a science-based subject. There is no upper age limit. Some employers may recognise relevant experience in a related field, but others do not recruit untrained staff.
There are employers throughout the UK, including vehicle parts and accessories shops and parts departments of retail motor vehicle dealerships. There is likely to be a shortage of skilled people in the future.
With experience there are good opportunities to progress into supervisory and management positions.
