Tyre or exhaust fitters repair and replace worn or damaged tyres or exhaust systems.

• Some fitters deal with both tyres and exhausts, others specialise in one of these types of work.
• Fitters work in specialist tyre and exhaust centres or alongside technicians in garages or workshops.
• If they work for a large company, they may deal with other tasks such as repairing vehicle suspension systems, steering or brakes.
• Fitters can work on any kind of vehicle, from cars or light vehicles to large goods or public service vehicles.
• They may take payments by cash, cheque or credit card.

Fitters are likely to work five or six days a week, on a rota - most tyre and exhaust centres are open long hours, including weekends and evenings.

Salaries range from around £4,500 up to £10,400 a year.

Tyre/exhaust fitters should:

• be physically fit
• be polite and helpful with the public
• have numerical ability for handling cash and credit card transactions
• be conscious of health and safety regulations.

There are plenty of opportunities for tyre/exhaust fitters, particularly in towns and cities.

No particular educational qualifications are necessary, but literacy and numeracy are important. Some employers may want applicants to be able to drive or be willing to learn. There is no upper age limit.

Training can take from six weeks for elementary training to two years for full training.

With experience it is possible to become a supervisor and then a manager.
