Tourist information centre assistants provide information and ideas on day visits, holidays or business visits to their local area.
The main day-to-day jobs include:
Working hours vary. Assistants are likely to work on a rota, including some weekends and bank holidays. Many jobs are part time or seasonal. Most work indoors, spending most of the day in the public area.
Salaries range from £8,000 for new assistants, to £15,000 for supervisors.
A tourist information centre assistant should have:
Between 3,000 and 3,500 people work in Britain's tourist information centres. They are spread throughout the country - around 600 in England, 150 in Scotland, 80 in Wales and 30 in Northern Ireland.
There are no set qualifications, but some GCSEs/S grades are often preferred. Previous experience of working with customers and handling cash is useful, and foreign languages are required for some centres. Employers welcome applicants from all age groups.
Assistants are trained mostly on the job, but may attend courses organised by tourist boards. In Scotland, there is a centrally organised training programme.
