Job Description - Print Page

  • Toolmakers use a range of machines to make tools to be used by other engineering craftspeople and operatives. For example, they make jigs and fixtures, parts for assembling on an assembly line, and dies for stamping out car body panels.
  • Using one, or several, machines, and working with a metal blank or pre-shaped casting, they cut the metal to the shape required by the drawing. Finishing is done with hand tools such as files.
  • Machine setters set, program and maintain production on computer-controlled CNC machines.

The working week is usually 39 hours, Monday to Friday. Shifts, overtime and weekend working may be required. They generally work in a well-lit, clean and tidy modern factory, but some workshops are still greasy and cluttered.

Incomes start at around £14,000, and senior craftspeople can earn £25,000.

Toolmakers/machine setters should:

  • be able to do mental calculations

  • have maths and computer skills
  • to be able to work on their own

They work throughout the country for manufacturing companies with their own toolmaking department or specialist workshops making tools to order for other companies.

People normally train through a Modern Apprenticeship, or start work with GCSEs/S grades (A-E/1-5). They can also study for NVQs/SVQs or BTEC/SQA awards.

They may be promoted to supervisor or foreman/woman over a toolmaking section or workshop, or to inspector. A move to workshop manager may be possible.
