The working week is usually 39 hours, Monday to Friday. Shifts, overtime and weekend working may be required. They generally work in a well-lit, clean and tidy modern factory, but some workshops are still greasy and cluttered.
Incomes start at around £14,000, and senior craftspeople can earn £25,000.
Toolmakers/machine setters should:
They work throughout the country for manufacturing companies with their own toolmaking department or specialist workshops making tools to order for other companies.
People normally train through a Modern Apprenticeship, or start work with GCSEs/S grades (A-E/1-5). They can also study for NVQs/SVQs or BTEC/SQA awards.
They may be promoted to supervisor or foreman/woman over a toolmaking section or workshop, or to inspector. A move to workshop manager may be possible.
