Wardrobe assistants work on TV, film and theatre productions. They carry out a variety of jobs, including helping to make or assemble costumes, mending, altering, cleaning and ironing them, and looking after accessories such as hats and shoes.
They may act as dressers for one or more performers, making sure all their costumes are ready and helping them with costume changes.
They work flexible, often unsocial hours. Work is mainly in the daytime during rehearsal periods, but once a theatre production begins it is more likely to be before, during and after performances. Filming work often involves early starts and late finishes. The work can involve lots of sitting down, sewing and mending, and working conditions can be cramped and hot.
Salaries range from around £10,000 a year for new wardrobe assistants, up to £25,000 a year or more for experienced wardrobe staff.

The main work opportunities are in large towns and cities. There are also jobs in some rural venues, with touring theatre companies, and with TV and film production companies.
There are no set academic requirements for entry. However, useful qualifications include NVQs/SVQs and City & Guilds in sewing skills, BTEC/SQA awards, Foundation degrees and degrees in performing arts with costume specialisms. Some people enter this job after working part time or casually with a local theatre or production company. Adult entry is possible.
Much of the training is carried out on the job, with guidance from the wardrobe master/mistress or other experienced staff. Degree course content includes practical work and assessment. Some courses involve work placements.
An experienced assistant may gain promotion to wardrobe master/mistress. Those working at small venues and companies, or touring, may progress to working in a major theatre or with larger production companies. There may be opportunities to work overseas when filming on location or touring with a theatre company.
