A stage/set designer works to create an authentic and appropriate look for any theatre, TV or film production.
The role includes:
Designers must be prepared to work irregular hours to ensure the production is on schedule. They may work in theatres or studios, from home, or on location.
Salaries for assistant designers start at around £14,500 a year, although most designers work freelance and negotiate their rates.
Stage/set designers should be:
Most designers are freelance. They are hired to work on specific projects by theatres or producing companies. Nearly all designers have a design degree, but it is possible to start in a junior role, such as props assistant.
Designers train as they work. Some study to gain specialist skills such as computer-aided design.
Stage/set designers can move on to work as production designers or art directors, who lead the design team for larger productions.
