There are around 50,000 people employed in professional sport in the UK. Most have worked their way up from amateur status. They attract the attention of professional clubs through recommendation or being spotted by club scouts and selectors.
Grants and scholarships may be available for those with the potential to achieve professional standards.
Although most sports professionals do not need educational qualifications, it is advisable to gain some in order to plan for future careers, as playing careers are often short. Some professionals move into related areas such as sports coaching, administration, management or journalism, or become officials such as referees and umpires.
