Signwriters/signmakers use a range of skills and technology to create signs for indoor and outdoor display. They are involved in the design, manufacture and installation of signs ranging from simple shop fronts to giant three-dimensional rooftop displays.
The job may involve working with:
Signwriters/signmakers work around 37 hours a week, but additional hours are often needed to complete projects. They are usually based in a factory or studio, but some outdoor work can be required. They may need to do a lot of lifting, and sometimes to work at heights.
Signwriters/signmakers with an NVQ Level 2 qualification start on around £9,500 a year. Those with considerable experience and management responsibilities can earn £30,000 or more.
A signwriter or signmaker needs:
Sign companies are based throughout the UK. Many employers offer Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships in this area of work. Entrants need four GCSEs/S grades (A-D/1-4) to enter the apprenticeship scheme. Some people enter the industry after gaining a degree in graphic design or a similar subject.
Most training is carried out on the job. Apprenticeships lead to NVQ/SVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Signmaking. Subjects covered include communication, IT, using numbers and working with others.
Signwriters/signmakers can specialise in different areas of the industry, working as estimators, planners or quality technicians. With experience, it is possible to move into a managerial role, or to become self-employed and work as a freelance signwriter/signmaker.
