  • Security systems installers fit and maintain electronic systems that detect intruders, and control the access of people leaving and entering buildings or sites.
  • Installers work to a security system plan drafted by a security surveyor or designer. Installers decide which power tools and materials they need, and install the security system following the plan. They connect it to the control panels, normally by cable, or sometimes by wirefree or radio system links. Finally, they test the new security system, and then explain to the customer or operators how to use it.

Security systems installers work 9 to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Weekend work, overtime and on-call work may be required.

Salaries range from around £12,000, to over £20,000 a year.

Security systems installers should:

  • be good at practical work
  • be interested in electronics and how electronic devices work
  • be able to solve problems and follow plans and instructions
  • be able to work neatly.

Employers are security systems firms, large and small, throughout the UK. Self-employment is quite common. There are different ways to train, such as an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship, a City & Guilds award, or NVQs/SVQs.

There is increasing demand for security systems installers, and opportunities for promotion are good. Experienced installers may specialise in designing systems, supervising teams or working with specialist surveillance equipment.
