The role of the religious leader differs from faith to faith, but certain activities are common to most religions:

  • preparing talks and speaking to gatherings at a place of worship
  • conducting ceremonies, such as marriages or funerals
  • listening, advising and offering comfort to people
  • religious study and passing on knowledge to followers
  • involvement in religious education, community affairs and inter-faith activities
  • mediating in disputes between people of different denominations
  • administrative work, attending committees, fund raising and visiting institutions such as prisons, sometimes helped by an assistant.

Some leaders also write regularly for publication, and others become involved in human rights and social welfare issues.

Being a religious leader is a 24-hours-a-day, seven days-a-week profession.

New entrants start at around £4,000 a year; senior religious leaders earn over £20,000.

A religious leader needs to be:

  • able to understand and believe in their own religion
  • prepared to discuss and defend the ways of the religion
  • able to preach and teach the religion
  • able to relate to people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds.

There are 18 recognised religions in the UK. Christianity is the dominant one.

No standard route exists to becoming a religious leader, but a good education is helpful. Spiritual dedication and faith are essential. Individuals should consult with senior members of their faith to decide how best to proceed.

Age is not a restriction to becoming a religious leader, and life experience and maturity are often skills a religious leader needs.

Different religions have different methods of training their members for leadership: this may involve spending time on retreats, at monasteries or alone for personal reflection.

There are no set ways of being promoted, and each religion has a different structure.
