Reflexology is a complementary therapy which is used to treat a range of conditions. The reflexologist applies pressure to areas, or reflexes, of the feet which correspond to different parts of the body.

When the reflexologist first meets the patient, they take a full medical history before beginning treatment. The reflexologist uses precise movements to massage all areas on both feet. Reflexology can also be practised on the hands.

Hours are flexible and can include evenings and weekends. Reflexologists can work in a variety of settings including patients' homes, alternative therapy centres, hospices and even cruise ships.

Most reflexologists are self-employed so income varies considerably. A newly qualified reflexologist could earn £12,000 a year, and a reflexologist with an established practice could earn £40,000.

A reflexologist needs:

  • to be a good communicator and listener
  • a genuine desire to help people
  • to have supple fingers.

There are around 15,000 reflexologists practising in the UK. As more people become interested in complementary therapies, demand is likely to increase.

The minimum age to start training is usually 18. There are no set entry requirements, but courses involve a lot of written work as well as the study of human biology. There is no maximum age to start training.

Courses are often part time, but involve a lot of home study and practical work as well as theory. There are usually case studies, examinations and practical assessments to complete.

There is no formal career path for reflexologists. Many reflexologists go on to train in other complementary therapies, allowing them to offer a wider service to clients.
