Do you want to become a Optometrist? Here is some information to help point you in the right direction:

Job Description - Print Page

  • Optometrists are health specialists who carry out detailed eye examinations.
  • They test patients' eyes for sight defects and eye disease, using a range of tests and sophisticated equipment.
  • When necessary, they prescribe and fit spectacles or contact lenses.
  • If they detect signs of eye disease they refer the patient to medical colleagues.

They typically work a five-day week of 37.5 hours, Monday to Saturday, although some work longer hours. Part-time work is also possible.

The job is normally done in a community setting, although optometrists may choose to specialise in hospital work. If they work in hospitals they may also be involved in laboratory work.

Income for newly registered optometrists in private practice can range from £15,000 to £30,000 a year. With experience this can rise to as much as £65,000.

Optometrists need:

  • the ability to understand and apply scientific principles and methods
  • numerical understanding for handling mathematical information
  • good interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in working with people
  • patience to perform repetitive tasks.

There are currently around 7,500 registered optometrists in the UK. Most of the 260 graduates each year are able to find employment.

Optometrists must have a degree in optometry. Mature applicants are welcomed - and entry requirements may be relaxed slightly for them.

Qualified optometrists may choose to work in private practice or may work in the Hospital Eye Service.

Career structures vary from firm to firm. Small companies may only employ an assistant optometrist, while larger companies may have wider prospects. Advanced qualifications increase prospects of promotion.
