Job Description - Print Page

  • Operational researchers help organisations to develop more effective systems and operational procedures.
  • They do this by using advanced analytical techniques and applying their understanding of an organisation's business to develop innovative solutions.
  • The work involves interviewing people, at every level of an organisation, about the nature of a problem.

Operational researchers usually work 37 hours a week, although longer hours and weekend working may be required to meet project deadlines. They are office based but visit clients' premises.

Salaries start from £19,000 a year. Experienced operational researchers may earn up to £50,000.

Operational researchers should:

  • be able to communicate clearly with people at all levels
  • have excellent written and presentation skills
  • a high level of numeracy and computer literacy
  • have analytical minds
  • have an inventive approach to problem solving.

There are numerous opportunities for operational researchers throughout industry and commerce. Major employers include manufacturers, financial and service sectors, management consultancies and government.

Operational researchers usually need a degree in operational research or in a numerate subject like science, business, maths or computer science. It is generally a young person's career, so older applicants may find it difficult to make a start unless they have substantial relevant experience.

Some employers have graduate training schemes where new researchers work on projects under supervision, gradually taking on more responsibility. Graduates who join the Civil Service Fast Stream are given ongoing training and development.

There are excellent opportunities to move into project management or general management.
