Job Description - Print Page

Nutritional therapy is a way of using diet and supplements to encourage the body's natural healing. A nutritional therapist aims to detoxify, correct vitamin and mineral imbalances and restore healthy digestion. They carry out diagnostic tests and ask questions about the patient's medical history.

They then recommend a tailored programme, focusing on which foods to eliminate and which foods to increase, together with supplements.

Nutritional therapists tend to work flexible hours. They usually work in a health clinic, or occasionally in patients' homes. Most are self-employed, charging £20 to £60 an hour.

A nutritional therapist needs:

  • empathy with patients and sensitivity to their needs
  • a genuine desire to help people
  • good communication skills.

The British Association of Nutritional Therapists has over 225 members in the UK and demand for nutritional therapy is increasing. Nutritional therapists may work in private practice and other organisations such as prisons, the NHS and mental health. Some therapists follow a career in research, teaching or public health.

There are a number of courses available in nutritional therapy throughout the country, including diplomas, degrees and postgraduate qualifications.

People have often had another career before they begin to train in nutritional therapy. Previous experience or qualifications in medically-related areas, a caring profession or counselling are welcomed. Life experience and the ability to relate well to other people count for a great deal.

There are no direct promotion prospects for self-employed practitioners, as success depends on building up and maintaining a sound reputation. Some therapists follow a career in research, teaching or public health.
