Nurses are trained to care for ill and injured people, and for those who are hampered by their age or by a disability. By providing healthcare and advice, nurses help individuals and their families to live more comfortable lives.
Nurses can work in a wide variety of different roles and settings. Their tasks are likely to include:
· acting as the first point of contact for their patients
· observing, monitoring and recording patients' conditions
· reassuring patients who may be anxious
· counselling patients and their relatives.
Nurses work as part of a care team, liaising with doctors and many other healthcare professionals.
They normally work 37.5 hours week. This may include weekend and night shift work. There are many opportunities for flexible working hours.
Nurses work in:
· hospitals, GP surgeries and clinics
· the community, supporting patients in their homes
· nursing and residential homes
· hospices
· industry, within occupational health services
· prisons, education and the Armed Forces.
Salaries start at around £18,114 a year. A nurse consultant can earn over £50,000 a year.
A nurse should:
· have excellent people skills and a commitment to helping others
· have stamina
· be practical and able to pay attention to detail
· have good writing and numerical ability.
The National Health Service (NHS) is the largest employer and opportunities in nursing are growing. Nursing applicants do a degree or diploma course that combines classroom and workplace experience. Universities set their own entry requirements. There are several alternative routes into the profession for those with few educational qualifications.
Once they are registered, nurses can undertake further training to specialise in a particular field. For example, they may become midwives, health visitors or district nurses, or apply to join one of the national health advice services. They may go on to teach, work in research, or take on leadership or management roles.
