Job Description - Print Page

Model makers design and make models. The models can be produced for different reasons, e.g. to show what a building development or exhibition stand will look like, or to show products, objects or figures to scale, such as model yachts, dolls houses or famous people. They use a range of hand, power and machine tools in their work.

Their work is mainly indoors, in workshops, although they sometimes travel to meet clients or visit sites. Working hours are usually long and flexible, including evenings and weekends. Workshops can be noisy, dirty and dusty. The work can involve long periods of standing at work benches, or sitting at drawing boards.

Salaries range from around £11,000 for a new model maker, to more than £40,000 for very experienced, established ones. Freelance model makers are paid set or negotiated fees per project.

A model maker should:

  • be imaginative and creative
  • have good drawing skills
  • be good at working with their hands and paying attention to detail
  • have good communication skills and be positive in promoting ideas
  • be able to use computer-based design programmes
  • be aware of relevant health and safety issues
  • have the stamina to work long hours to meet tight deadlines
  • enjoy creating and discussing ideas.

Many model makers work freelance, but some work for design, model making, engineering and other companies, mainly based in and around London and other large UK cities.

There are no set academic qualifications for the job. Higher national diploma (HND), Foundation degree, BA (Hons) and BSc (Hons) degree courses exist in model making and design subjects. There is no upper age limit for this work.

The courses combine practical work and academic work. General design NVQs/SVQs are available, and in some areas, apprenticeships are also available. The Design Council, British Design and Art Direction (D&AD), and the Institution of Engineering Designers provide continuing skills development opportunities in design and engineering design fields.

Promotion opportunities may occur for model makers working for companies, e.g. to team leader or senior model maker. Freelance model makers' progression depends on establishing a strong reputation and working to a consistently high standard.
