Production operatives in the metals industry check machinery before the manufacturing process begins. They collect and weigh the materials needed for production, carry out checks during manufacturing, close down machinery after manufacturing and clean and maintain equipment.
They work 37.5 hours a week plus overtime. Shift work is common. When at work in the production area protective clothing is worn.
Rates of pay vary, but a newly employed production operative is likely to earn around £17,000 a year. With experience this figure could rise to around £27,000 a year.

The UK metals industry is a large manufacturing exporter with over 15,000 companies in the industry. There is a trend towards specialisation of manufacturing products aimed at a particular market.
The usual entry route for young people is as an apprentice. For entry to an Apprenticeship there are no set entry requirements, however employers are looking for young people with an ability in maths, English and science, good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude. For entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship, four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) including maths and English are usually required.
A number of NVQs/SVQs related to metal processing are available to employees of all ages at Levels 1 to 4.
With the right training and experience, production operatives can become supervisors or team leaders.
