Job Description - Print Page

Metallurgists study the properties of metals and alloys. They work in a wide range of occupational sectors, including research and development, design and manufacture, production management and quality control. Their work could involve supervising the production of metal, designing metal components, researching ways of making metals stronger, testing or analysing metals, or investigating accidents.

Hours and conditions vary. Some metallurgists work normal daytime hours, from Monday to Friday, but others are required to work on a shift basis. In technologically advanced industries, work conditions are scrupulously clean, but iron and steel works can be noisy, hot and dirty.

Salaries range from £18,000 to £35,000 a year.

A metallurgist needs:

  • a logical mind with good problem-solving skills
  • to be able to work in a team
  • an interest in science and manufacturing.

Metallurgists could work for companies producing metals and alloys, foundries, manufacturers producing metal components and finished products, energy suppliers, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) or specialist consultancies.

It is possible to enter with an HND or HNC, but most metallurgists have degrees. Relevant subjects include metallurgy, materials science, chemical engineering or physics. Some companies which employ metallurgists offer Apprenticeships. There is no maximum age for entry.

Training is usually provided in house. Major employers may offer accredited training schemes for graduates.

Metallurgists may be promoted to senior technical management. Some move into fields like production management, quality assurance, technical sales or product and business development.
