Mechanical engineering technicians work with anything that moves mechanically. This includes the moving parts of an engine, such as gears and pulleys, and also substances such as air and water which can be moved mechanically.
They usually work under the supervision of an incorporated or chartered mechanical engineer and undertake a wide range of work including:

Most young people enter this work with an Apprenticeship, which combines study with work-based experience. Entry requirements vary, but are likely to be four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) including maths, science or technology. A number of colleges offer diploma level courses leading to mechanical engineering technician status. There are opportunities for mature candidates.
To gain the status of EngTech, mechanical engineering technicians must have gained a qualification from an appropriate engineering institution and be registered formally with the Engineering Council UK.
Engineering technicians are employed in supervisory and management positions. With further study and the right experience they can become incorporated and chartered engineers.
