Meat process workers are employed to cut, de-bone, trim, portion and pack carcasses of slaughtered livestock such as beef, pork, lamb and poultry. They work in all areas of meat production, such as:

  • abattoirs
  • wholesale meat factories
  • catering butchers
  • meat manufacturing plants.

There are stringent health and safety regulations in the meat production industry and employees must maintain cleanliness, hygiene and food safety.

Meat process workers usually work around 40 hours a week, from Monday to Friday. Some work shifts, including weekends and it may be possible to work part time. They may be based on a production line, using a variety of knives and blades. Some areas are more automated. Some production areas are very noisy and there is often a strong smell of raw meat. The job can be physically demanding.

The salary for a meat process worker ranges from approximately £10,000 to £25,000.
