Production planners usually work a basic 37 to 40-hour week, Monday to Friday, but may have to work some evenings and weekends, and may be on call to deal with problems. They spend most of their time in an office but also visit the factory shop floor.
Salaries start from at least £14,000 a year. Senior production planners can earn over £25,000.
A manufacturing production planner should:
Production planners work for large and small manufacturing companies throughout the UK. Most manufacturers are in towns and cities.
They can either start direct in this work as trainees, or take up other work first and gain experience before being promoted to production planner. To start as a trainee they are likely to need a BTEC/SQA HNC/HND or a degree. There is no upper age limit for starting in this work.
Production planners normally train by working alongside experienced staff. There are a number of qualifications they can work for.
