Job Description - Print Page

Management consultants work with organisations, helping to make them more efficient and more profitable. They often advise organisations that are dealing with change, or provide skills or knowledge that the organisation lacks.

The work involves looking closely at areas like finance, technology and human resources, and collecting and analysing data to build up a detailed picture of how the organisation is run. This allows consultants to identify inefficiencies and other problems. They consider possible solutions, present them to the client and work with the organisation while changes are made. Projects can last for a few hours or several years, depending on the needs of the client.

Salaries for management consultants range from around £20,000 to £250,000 a year.

They usually work normal office hours, from Monday to Friday. Additional hours are often required. A lot of time is spent visiting clients, anywhere in the UK or overseas, and consultants may stay away from home for days, weeks or months.

A management consultant should:

  • be objective and logical
  • have excellent communication and listening skills
  • be confident working with numbers and statistics
  • be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • enjoy problem solving
  • have a genuine interest in business and management.

Management consultancies range from huge multinationals to small companies. A high proportion of these companies are based in London and south-east England. Competition for jobs is intense.

Most management consultants have honours degrees. Subjects like business, management, economics, maths, psychology or information technology are particularly useful. A relevant postgraduate qualification, such as a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA), can be an advantage. The majority of entrants are aged between 25 and 35 years with management or commercial experience.

A new entrant usually receives several months' training under the guidance of an experienced colleague. There may be the opportunity to study for an MBA or Institute of Management Consultancies Award.

A junior consultant may be promoted to consultant and then team leader. Some experienced management consultants move into senior management positions in industry. Others set up their own consultancies.
