Leather technologists are concerned with the leather-making process.
Their work, which is both practical and technical, involves:
Leather technologists are likely to work Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, although shift work may sometimes be required. They divide their time between the shop floor, laboratory and office. Travel within the UK or overseas may be required.
Salaries range from approximately £14,000, up to £30,000.
Leather technologists should be:
Around 500 qualified leather technologists are employed in the UK, mainly in leather manufacturing. Jobs are available in the footwear industry, in chemical and engineering firms, and in the manufacture of bags, suitcases, upholstery, football and cricket balls, as well as car seats.
There are many different ways to train, such as doing a Modern Apprenticeship, NVQs/SVQs, or a degree. Most colleges welcome applications from mature students.
Adults with experience of technician work in other areas such as the chemical industry may be able to retrain in leather technology.
It may be possible to move on from work as a leather technologist to other jobs as a production or technical manager.
