Laundry workers could be employed in a laundry or in a dry-cleaning company. This might be a small-scale domestic laundry, a high street dry cleaner, a commercial company with large contracts from hotels, hospitals and industry, or the in-house laundry of a hotel or hospital.
The job could involve:
Reception/collection: laundry workers receive articles, check for damage or stains and label them.
Sorting: they sort items by colour, size, fabric type and appropriate cleaning process. They may have to check items against customers' lists.
Cleaning/washing: they may use water and spotting chemicals to remove stains before processing.
Finishing: they finish articles by drying, pressing, steam finishing and folding.
Packing: dry-cleaning workers check cleaned articles, pack or bag them, and hang them ready for collection. Laundry workers pack linen into bags or baskets, and hang or fold items of clothing.
Many laundries are open seven days a week. Laundry workers usually work 35 to 40 hours a week, possibly in shifts. Dry cleaners are usually open on Saturdays, and increasingly on Sundays and late evenings. Part-time work may be available.
Laundries can be humid, warm and noisy. In a dry cleaners there may be some fumes.
Salaries range from around £8,000 to £35,500 (for managers).

Laundry workers can find work throughout the country in dry-cleaning shops, in large dry-cleaning plants and laundries. Formal educational qualifications are not generally needed, but applicants should be able to read and understand written instructions. There are no age restrictions for this type of work.
Training usually takes place on the job, supervised by an experienced member of staff.
With experience, they could gain promotion to supervisor and management levels.
