Landscapers construct and maintain gardens, parks, sports grounds and other outdoor areas. They also work on interior landscaping projects, as in shopping centres.
They prepare the ground, which may involve drainage as well as earthworks and cultivation. They plant trees and shrubs, put in bedding plants, and prune trees and shrubs when required. They also turf and seed lawns and sports grounds.
Landscapers with particular skills, such as laying paving, constructing rock or water gardens, or seeding lawns may specialise; others carry out a wide range of tasks.
The basic working week is 39 hours, but overtime, which may involve weekends, is usual. Early starts are common. Landscapers work outdoors in all weathers.
Salaries range from around £10,000 to over £25,000.

Landscapers are mainly employed by landscape contractors and by local authority parks departments.
Educational qualifications are not always needed, but they will be required for most college courses, and for some jobs. People can choose from a range of courses. There is no upper age limit, and some people join landscape contractors after experience in other land-based fields.
Opportunities occur in the larger firms for progression to chargehand, foreman/woman or contracts manager.
