Job Description - Print Page

Geological technicians support professional geologists by carrying out a variety of tasks including:

  • analysing rock samples
  • interpreting photographs
  • analysing data from seismic surveys
  • preparing maps.

Much of this work is carried out in laboratories using sophisticated equipment. Geological technicians may also be involved in research, teaching, maintaining instruments and equipment and training junior staff.

Technicians in laboratories usually work standard hours, although there may be call-outs for those who maintain equipment. Some work may take place outdoors.

Geological technicians earn between £12,000 and £30,000.

Geological technicians should have:

  • good scientific and technical skills
  • the ability to pay careful attention to detail
  • good mathematical ability.

There are about 3,500 geological technical support staff in the UK, employed by the British Geological Survey, the oil industry and UK universities and other institutions.

Geological technicians can start straight from school if they have at least four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3). For some posts people need A levels/H grades. Some organisations may require higher qualifications such as a higher national certificate/diploma (HNC/HND) or a degree. There are opportunities for mature entrants who have completed an appropriate college or university course.

Training is mainly on the job. Many organisations provide short in-service training courses and encourage their technicians to gain further qualifications.

With experience, technicians may be able to move into managerial posts. Geological technicians may be able to progress to a professional role, eg geologist.
