• Petrol service sales assistants operate a console to dispense motor fuel from pumps in the forecourt, and a till.
• They take payments from customers by cash, cheque, debit or credit card.
• A few petrol stations offer attended service, which means refueling customers' vehicles for them.
• They are usually also involved in the retail shop side of the business.

Sales assistants usually work shifts, including some nights, weekends and bank holidays. Part-time work and overtime are often available. They spend most of their shift inside the shop, sitting at the console.

The starting salary is around £8,000. A supervisor could earn up to £15,000.

A petrol service sales assistant should:

• have a pleasant and helpful manner
• be able to work without supervision
• be accurate
• stay calm under pressure
• be trustworthy and security-conscious.

There are petrol stations across the UK, more in towns and cities than in rural areas. Staff turnover tends to be high, so there are regular vacancies.

Assistants usually do not need any qualifications. Some employers may ask for GCSEs/S grades (A-E/1-5). They need to be 18 to operate a forecourt without supervision.

Employers may prefer mature applicants.

They train on the job, supervised by an experienced assistant or manager. There is usually an induction course, followed by short courses leading to qualifications.

Petrol service sales assistants may be able to move into retail management or another role in the retail industry once they have gained experience.
