Footwear manufacturing operatives are involved in making all kinds of footwear, including shoes, boots, trainers, safety wear, and orthopaedic products. In recent years, there has been a decline in mass production in the UK, and more operatives now work for small, high-quality producers.

Most footwear manufacturing operatives work between 37 and 40 hours a week, from Monday to Friday. Depending on the employer, a shift system may be in operation. It is usual to work in a small, supervised team. Protective clothing is provided for certain tasks.
Salaries range from around £10,000 to £18,000 a year for trained operatives.

There are no specific academic qualifications required for entry. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate their ability to work with their hands and with machinery. They may also have to pass an eye test and a medical examination. Adult entry is possible. Experience in a related industry is advantageous.
Most of the training is carried out on the job, under the supervision of an experienced colleague. Employers may provide the opportunity to work towards NVQs/SVQs in Footwear Manufacture and Footwear Repair.
Promotion may be possible to a supervisory or training role. Experienced operatives may choose to move into other areas of manufacturing.
