Professional football is a very competitive career and only the most talented individuals can hope to make a living from the game.
Players on full-time contracts with a club spend their time:
• playing matches
• in training sessions, which involve a mixture of ball work, weights, sprints and general fitness
• in team meetings, developing tactics and assessing the next opposition
• talking to the media
• carrying out community work on behalf of the club.
Players work with a range of specialists such as fitness coaches, physiotherapists, psychologists and their team manager.
Clubs operate a strict code of conduct which players must follow.
Footballers train most days except match days, which are usually at weekends or on weekday evenings. Most of their time is spent outside, although training may also take place in gyms, swimming pools and indoor sports halls. A lot of time is also spent travelling to matches.
Footballers' salaries vary considerably, from around £100 a week as a trainee to £75,000 a week as a top Premiership player.
Footballers should:
• have an exceptional talent for football
• have a high standard of fitness
• be dedicated with the desire to keep improving
• be professional and self-disciplined
• be interested in sport and keeping fit.
Although there are no academic entry requirements to become a footballer, younger players are encouraged to gain some qualifications as a back-up for when they finish playing, as most careers are over by the age of 35 years.
Most clubs run either an Academy or a Centre of Excellence, which offer three-year football scholarships that involve a mixture of football, academic work and advice on lifestyle issues.
Players are regularly transferred from one club to another, sometimes moving abroad. This provides the opportunity to take on new challenges and earn more money. Many professional footballers also move into coaching and management. Some may become football agents or work in the media.
