Food scientists and technologists work in the food and drink industry, where they:
They work 35 to 40 hours a week, but they might have to work shifts, including nights, if production is done overnight. They often work in, or close to, the factory where the food is manufactured or processed. Food scientists often work in laboratories.
Laboratory technicians earn about £18,000 a year. Senior managers' salaries can be over £50,000.
Food scientists and technologists need:
They may work for food manufacturers, food retailers, government research establishments, universities, local authorities and independent research organisations.
Most food scientists and technologists have a degree or HNC/HND in food science, food studies, food technology, or in a specialist area such as baking technology or meat technology. However, it is also possible to start out as a laboratory assistant or technician.
There are no age restrictions on starting in food science and technology.
In this work there are prospects of promotion to managerial work and opportunities to specialise.
