Job Description - Print Page

Fine artists create original works of art in a variety of ways, which might include:

  • painting
  • sculpting
  • carving
  • printing
  • photography.

The artist might specialise in a particular medium, such as oils or photography, however some are skilled in a variety of techniques. They then try to sell their work through galleries, agents or dealers.

Artists do not work regular hours. If they have a piece to finish they will often work long hours until it is completed. A studio is the regular site for an artist's work where they would ensure that the room is well-lit. They might share a studio with other artists in a collective, or if they are more established, they may have a studio in their home.

There is no typical average salary, although some who work as an artist in residence can earn around £24,000 to £26,000 a year in fees. Some more established artists may be able to get a commission with a public body where they would produce work to set briefs. It is quite common for an artist to find regular income by working as an arts teacher, community worker, arts therapist or an arts council administrator.

A successsful artist needs:

  • high levels of creativity
  • self-discipline to complete work on time
  • the ability to work on their own or with other artists
  • good communications skills to build contacts
  • good money management skills
  • belief in their own work and ability.

The majority of artists have formal qualifications including an HND or degree in art and design. Most courses require five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3). Having completed a degree, many fine artists specialise in a certain area and take a postgraduate qualification in this field.

There is no upper age limit to begin work as an artist although starting a career in the field early may help to build experience and contacts for later life.

Success depends on the amount of sales to interested collectors and an artist's reputation among other artists and collectors. To gain wider recognition artists look to hold an exhibition or complete a public art commission.
