A fast food service assistant serves different types of meals, snacks and drinks to customers. Fast food outlets can be found in High Streets in towns and cities all over the country, as well as in out-of-town shopping centres, airports and motorway service stations. They include:

  • eat-in and drive-through burger bars
  • pizza places
  • Indian or Chinese take-aways
  • sandwich shops.

Fast food service assistants generally stand behind a counter, taking customer orders and payments and relaying orders to colleagues in the kitchens. In some outlets they may prepare food themselves, such as making sandwiches and salads, pouring drinks or heating up food in a microwave.

They usually work with a team of people in a fast-moving, frequently noisy and often hectic environment. Other duties may include cleaning and clearing up after customers.

A full-time assistant will generally work a 38 hour week. They usually work shifts to cover the busy periods, such as lunchtimes and weekends. Many assistants work part time.

The basic starting salary for a fast food service assistant is around £8,500. Supervisors and trainee managers can earn up to £18,000 or more.

A fast food service assistant needs to:

  • communicate well with a wide range of people
  • be reliable and efficient
  • be able to work quickly, especially during busy times
  • conform to health and safety regulations
  • be able to handle money accurately and honestly.

There are no set entry requirements, although experience in some aspect of customer service is an advantage. This is a growing industry with many available jobs.

Training is usually on the job. With larger chains it is provided through structured in-house training schemes. Fast food service assistants can work towards NVQ/SVQ Hospitality Quick Service Level 2, as well as a range of other vocational qualifications in food and drink preparation and service.

The well-known franchises offer development opportunities to progress into supervisory and management positions.
