Maintenance technicians ensure that vital or important industrial machinery and equipment keeps working, and if necessary is repaired, often within strict time deadlines.
 
In planned maintenance: technicians draw up an inspection schedule, make sure regular checks and maintenance tasks are done, check and calibrate instruments and replace worn parts as required.

In emergency maintenance: technicians compile staff rosters to provide 24 hour cover, ensure immediate reaction to emergencies, diagnose faults quickly and make immediate repairs.

In sales, maintenance technicians may be technical sales representatives, or work on after-sales service.
 
 Most maintenance technicians work 37 to 39 hours, five days a week. Shift work and emergency call-out work may be required. Technicians may work indoors in a factory or production plant, or outdoors checking equipment on a building site.
 
Salaries range from around £12,000 up to £30,000 a year.
 
 Engineering maintenance technicians should:

  • be interested in machinery and engineering
  • have practical hand skills
  • have number skills for doing calculations
  • have good communication skills.

 Employers include engineering, production or manufacturing companies. There is a steady demand for experienced technicians, with some opportunities to work abroad for
 multinational companies, particularly in EU countries, the USA, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

New entrants can do a Modern Apprenticeship, or study for AVCEs/ GSVQs, or BTEC/SQA awards, and then apply for a trainee technician post.. The most realistic entry route for adults is if they are already working as an engineering craftsperson.
 
There are good prospects for skilled and experienced technicians.
