Electronic engineering technicians work with low power electricity to control equipment such as:

  • telecommunications equipment
  • radios and televisions
  • computer applications
  • hospital diagnostic equipment
  • security and surveillance equipment
  • control systems - for everything from satellite tracking through to domestic appliances.

They usually work as part of a team with engineers from different engineering disciplines. Technicians may work in design, research and development, production and quality control.

Electronic engineering technicians may work in offices or laboratories, factories or the outdoors. Their work is usually based on daytime hours, but they often work weekends and night shifts.

Salaries range from around £13,000 a year to £30,000, or more.

Electronic engineering technicians should:

  • be good at working with their hands
  • have normal colour vision
  • be able to use tools and instruments
  • have mathematic ability and computer skills
  • be able to work in a methodical way, paying attention to detail.
  • be interested in problem-solving, maths and science.

Employers include manufacturers in all industries, research and development companies, IT and telecommunications companies, the Armed Forces, local and central government, and public utilities such as water, gas and electricity companies.

Entry for young people is typically via an Apprenticeship. Operatives, or adults in non-engineering jobs - especially at supervisory level, may be able to study part time.

Entrants train on the job in addition to studying on a day or block-release basis. Technicians can study for the professional qualification EngTech.

Progression for an electronic engineering technician is typically from apprentice through to chartered engineer.
