Experienced electrical engineers are usually either incorporated or chartered:

  • Chartered engineers may be involved in research and development or manufacture and installation. Typically they work as project leaders.

Their working hours are based on daytime work, but may include late finishes and work at weekends, depending on project deadlines. The work can take place in almost any environment, mostly indoors but sometimes outdoors.

Graduate engineers' pay starts at around £18,000 a year, and chartered electrical engineers earn around £45,000.

Electrical engineers should:

  • have an interest in science and technology
  • have an analytical mind
  • be good at maths
  • have a logical approach to problem solving.

Employers throughout the country include local and central government departments, the armed services, manufacturers, research and development companies, IT companies, and public utilities. Overseas work is possible with larger companies.

The usual way for young people to train is through a degree in an engineering subject. Adults may take mature candidate schemes if they do not have the normal academic qualifications.

There are promotion routes available in all companies. Many chartered electrical engineers work freelance or on short-term contracts.
