Do you want to become a Driver's Mate? Here is some information to help point you in the right direction:

Job Description - Print Page

A driver's mate works alongside a driver, usually in a large goods vehicle (LGV) or van engaged in the collection and delivery of goods. The job involves assisting the driver in carrying out his/her duties which may include:

  • checking the vehicle before departure
  • checking loading lists
  • the packing, sorting and loading of vehicles
  • lifting heavy items
  • planning routes
  • navigating for the driver
  • unloading and loading at delivery and collection points.

Driver's mates are responsible for giving support and advice on deliveries and routes and for ensuring that items being delivered are properly handled.

They may be engaged in:

  • the distribution of alcoholic beverages to pubs and restaurants
  • local and national furniture and house removals
  • general distribution to retail shops and supermarkets
  • the delivery of parcels and couriered items
  • the collection of waste and recycled goods.

A working week for a driver's mate is usually 45 hours. They sit in the cab alongside the driver, and will usually have to climb in and out of the cab at each stopping point. Uniforms may be provided and in some cases, heavy duty shoes, gloves and hard hats.

Salaries vary between £10,000 and £20,000 a year.

Driver's mates should be:

  • fit and healthy to cope with the physical demands of the role
  • confident in map reading and route planning.

Opportunities occur in all areas, but are more common in urban, industrial areas and city centres. Employers vary from national courier and parcel delivery companies to local contractors.

There are usually no academic qualifications required for this role. Training is almost always on the job, but may lead to driver training and further employment opportunities. Employers usually welcome applications from adults. Apprenticeships may be available for young people.

Driver's mates usually progress to jobs as drivers, or to more senior warehouse jobs.
