Job Description - Print Page

Door supervisors are responsible for people's safety in premises such as pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Their duties include:

• checking the suitability of people as they enter the building
• searching people for drugs or weapons
• dealing with conflict
• restraining and escorting individuals from the venue if necessary
• dealing with emergencies
• supervising people as they leave the premises.

Working hours for door supervisors vary. A full-time door supervisor may work five days a week in shifts of up to about eight hours. Some door supervisors also have other full-time or part-time jobs.

Salaries range from about £12,500 for new entrants to around £30,000 for head door supervisors.

Door supervisors need:

• good communication skills
• to be polite and courteous
• a smart appearance that is suitable for the venue
• to be alert to any potential problems
• to be able to deal with difficult situations in a calm, confident and safe manner
• to enjoy working with people in a pub/bar/club environment.

Most door supervisors work in venues such as pubs, bars and clubs in large towns and cities. Employment in this industry is growing, so there are good opportunities for people entering the work. Security companies also employ door supervisors.

All door supervisors in England and Wales need a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence. To get a licence, applicants must be over 18, pass an identity and criminal record check and have an approved door supervisor qualification. There are no minimum academic requirements for entry to the door supervisor qualifications.

The training for these qualifications is delivered in two parts. Each part lasts 15 hours including an examination. Part one covers the roles and responsibilities of a door supervisor and part two includes communication skills and conflict management. Additional training for door supervisors is given on the job and on other short courses.

There may be opportunities for progression into supervisory roles and into other areas of security work.
