A door attendant/commissionaire is a uniformed employee who provides customer care. Standing at the entrance of prestigious hotels, retail shops and entertainment venues, they ensure guests enter and leave the building safely. The job can include:
• opening vehicle doors
• hailing taxis
• keeping guests dry when arriving and departing
• answering questions, and providing information and directions to local attractions
• helping the elderly or less able people
• co-ordinating porters and other service staff.

Salaries range from around £9,100 to £13,000 a year, or more. Some are paid an hourly rate. Tips from guests can increase salaries considerably.

It is possible to become a door attendant/commissionaire without formal qualifications. Many employers look for a smart appearance, a pleasant manner and previous experience in a customer care role. There are no age limits for entry.
Door attendants/commissionaires are usually trained on the job. They may work towards NVQ/SVQ Levels 1 to 3 in Portering, Customer Care, Guest Service or Reception.
Career progression for door attendants/commissionaires may be limited in smaller establishments. Larger organisations are more likely to have opportunities for promotion to supervisory roles in security, concierge or front of house.
