Job Description - Print Page

Domestic appliance service technicians are responsible for ensuring that the appliances that people use in their homes operate safely and efficiently. The work involves:

  • the installation of domestic appliances, eg washing machines, cookers and refrigerators
  • the routine maintenance and servicing of appliances
  • the repair of appliances that have developed a fault
  • the writing of inspection reports, providing customers with receipts or invoices and giving quotes for work to be done.

They need to be competent in at least two trades, from electrical, mechanical, plumbing, electronics, gas or refrigeration.

Service technicians work around 40 hours a week. They may also have to be on call for urgent work outside their main hours, and work overtime, including evenings and weekends. As they have to travel from their base to customers' homes, they need to be able to drive.

Salaries start at around £10,000 to £15,000, and highly skilled service technicians can earn £25,000 or more.

Service technicians need:

  • good manual skills
  • an interest in how things work
  • strong communication skills for dealing with customers
  • problem-solving skills.

Employers include domestic appliance manufacturers, retail suppliers, independent gas contractors and utility companies, and CORGI-registered gas companies.

There is a current shortage of skilled, experienced staff throughout the country, particularly in the gas industry, so there is a range of opportunities.

There are no set entry requirements, but applicants are recommended to have GCSEs/S grades in English, maths, science and technology. New entrants train through Apprenticeships or in-house training schemes. It is also possible to undertake a full-time college course to gain relevant GNVQs/GSVQs or City & Guilds qualifications.

With experience, some service technicians become self-employed or work on a freelance or contract basis. It is also possible to move into technical sales or training.
