Dispensing opticians are trained to grind, fit and dispense spectacles, contact lenses and other optical appliances, following prescriptions written by optometrists and eye surgeons. (They need special training to fit and supply contact lenses.)
When making spectacles, they take into account the customer's prescription, occupation, lifestyle and facial features - and advise people on types of lens and on style and colour of frames.
Dispensing opticians typically work 37.5 hours a week over five days between Monday and Saturday. Some dispensing opticians work longer hours and those working in retail stores may work in the evenings and at weekends. Part-time work may also be possible.
Work environments are generally attractive, well lit and well ventilated.
Salaries range from around £15,000 to £29,000.

Employment prospects are generally good. However, vacancies in the Hospital Eye Service and as tutors in universities and colleges are very limited.
Dispensing opticians must hold the professional qualification of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. There are several routes to qualification, including full-time, part-time and distance learning programmes. The last two routes are for trainees in employment.
Promotion opportunities will vary according to the company. Opportunities are available to become self-employed, and many work in partnership with optometrists.
