Design engineers tend to specialise in one area, but all have to start from a brief or an idea for a product, or from a problem that needs to be solved. They use their creative and engineering skills to come up with the best, most cost-effective design. They may do some hand-drawing, but most design work is done on special computer packages.
Design engineers usually work 37 to 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but may work overtime in the evenings or at weekends. They are normally based in a design or drawing office, spending much of their time at the computer. They may have to travel to customers' sites or to manufacturing areas.
Salaries range from around £18,000 to more than £45,000 a year.
Design engineers need to:
There are job opportunities throughout the county in construction, building services, electronics, shipbuilding, aerospace, power generation, railways, electronics, and vehicle and consumer goods manufacture.
Most design engineers take a degree at university or college in an engineering subject such as materials, mechanical, electrical or civil engineering. Entry requirements for a degree course vary, but generally are a minimum of five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) and two A levels/three H grades, normally including maths and a science subject, or equivalent qualifications.
Most design engineers continue their professional training to gain incorporated design engineer or chartered design engineer status. Many also take postgraduate courses.
With experience they may be promoted to a senior design engineer or project manager, or move into roles in research and development or senior general management. Some become consultants or self-employed design engineers.
